Benefits of Morning Light: How to Reset Your Energy

When it comes to starting your day, understanding the benefits of morning light can be more important than your first cup of coffee.

The Science of the “First Light” Our bodies run on an internal clock called the circadian rhythm. This clock regulates everything from our mood and hunger to how deeply we sleep. To keep this clock accurate, it needs an “anchor” every morning. That anchor is bright, natural light.

When you step outside in the morning, the light signals your brain to:

  1. Stop Melatonin: It clears out the sleep fog by halting the production of sleep hormones.
  2. Trigger Cortisol: It provides a natural, healthy spike in cortisol that boosts your alertness and mood.
  3. Set the Sleep Timer: It tells your brain exactly when to start getting tired again later tonight.

Here’s my personal morning ritual:

  • The Coffee/Tea Walk: Instead of sitting at the kitchen table, take your mug to the porch or the backyard.
  • The Morning Gaze: Even 5 minutes of looking toward the horizon (not at the sun) is enough to trigger the biological shift.
  • Rain or Shine: Don’t let a rainy day stop you! The lux (light intensity) outside on a cloudy day is still significantly higher than the brightest indoor office lights.

The Result? Better mood, steady energy throughout the afternoon, and a much easier time falling asleep when your head hits the pillow. It is the simplest way to find your power and start your glow.
